What is dumpling soup?
This Easy Dumpling Soup is our take on the traditional dumpling soups from Chinese, Korean, and Japanese cuisines. It’s a quick and semi-homemade recipe that includes a savory clear broth, flavorful meat-filled dumplings, crisp greens, and a variety of condiments for added taste. To make this delicious soup, gather the following ingredients:
Is this an authentic recipe?
While this may not be an authentic dumpling soup, we strongly recommend exploring the diverse range and vibrant heritage associated with dumplings. Additionally, take a look at these recipes for genuine Chinese potstickers and Xiaolongbao (soup dumplings), Korean mandu, and Japanese gyoza.
What kind of dumplings to buy
You can find a wide variety of frozen dumplings at most grocery stores, available in different sizes, shapes, and fillings such as pork, vegetable, shrimp, or a combination of these flavors. Any type of frozen dumpling will work well for this recipe. However, if you’re on a tight budget, consider visiting an Asian grocery store for an even wider selection, larger quantities, and potentially lower prices.
How to know the dumplings are fully cooked:
Frozen dumplings are typically small in size, enabling them to be cooked rapidly when added to boiling broth. Nevertheless, since our recommended cooking time is solely determined by a limited number of brands we have tested (considering the multitude of other brands available), I strongly advise referring to the package instructions on your dumplings. This will ensure that you cook them for an adequate duration, while also checking the suggested serving size to ensure you prepare enough for two individuals.
Are the leftovers ANY good?
I do not advise saving these leftovers. The dumplings will continue to absorb the broth and become bloated, eventually falling apart. It is better to prepare only the amount you intend to eat, which is why I have created a recipe for two servings instead of four. Since it can be prepared quickly, it wouldn’t be a problem if you decided to make it twice in one evening!

How to Make easy dumpling soup – Step by Step Photos
Combine 2 cups of vegetable broth, 1 Tablespoon of soy sauce, 1 teaspoon of toasted sesame oil, and the white parts of a thinly sliced green onion in a medium-sized pot. Cook over medium-high heat. Set aside the green parts of the green onion for garnish. If using fish sauce or any other ingredients that require cooking time, add them now. This includes leftover cooked proteins, tofu, mushrooms, or any fresh or frozen vegetables that need to soften.
To begin, heat the broth over medium-high heat until it reaches a boiling point. Once it starts boiling, add 10 frozen dumplings to the pot. Cover the pot and let the soup return to a boil. Boil the dumplings for approximately 2 minutes or until they are fully cooked. It is important to check the recommended cooking time on the dumpling packaging to ensure they are cooked thoroughly. Additionally, refer to the nutrition label to ensure you add the appropriate amount for two servings.
To prepare, switch off the heat and mix in 1/2 cup of recently harvested spinach alongside the saved green onion slices.
Divide the soup evenly between two serving bowls and add your preferred garnishes on top. For ours, we opted for a sprinkle of sesame seeds and a generous spoonful of Sichuan Chili Crisp!
